Sunny day encore, temps in the low 70s. We headed into Zion N.P., only about 30 miles from Kanab. Incredible rock formations! This place is a zoo! Way too many people! There is NO place to park, anywhere. Even the visitor center in Springdale is full. The "scenic drive" is closed to cars anyway; you have to take the shuttle. We did not do that.
Since we couldn't find anywhere to park (I mean NOWHERE!) we decided to leave the park and go to a place called Kolob Canyons, another unit of the park in the northwest corner. To get there you have to go west and then go north a bit on I-15.
While this was crowded also, not nearly like the main park of the park, we were able to park in the upper lot and hike the Timber Creek trail. The views from here are just as spectacular. Lunch out of the cooler, with a great view, and perfect weather was a treat!
To get back to Kanab, we had to go back through the park and deal with some pretty long delays going through the mile long tunnel. Couldn't figure out why there were limiting traffic to one way at a time.
Stopped on the way back at the Thunderbird Cafe, "Home of the Ho-Made Pies".
Back in Kanab, we had an outstanding Italian dinner at The Rocking V Cafe.
Kanab is a cool little town! Friendly people, nice restaurants, its a great place to be "home base" while you explore Utah parks. Look for their annual Balloons and Tunes Festival in February.
Tomorrow 300 miles to Death Valley!
