Another sunny day, but smoky again! We left Kanab and headed across no-man's land to Hurricane, UT then on down to St. George on I-15. We saw Snow Canyon State Park on the map so went to check it out. Beautiful red rock canyon with miles of paved bike paths and hiking trails! We entered the north end of the park and exited on the south end through the town Ivins which is really nice with new gated subdivisions and golf courses. The climate here is odd - very mild winters and beastly hot summers!
Back on I-15 we were surprised at how mountainous and rugged it is as we followed the Virgin River Canyon. About 50 miles north of Vegas, we head off south to visit the Valley of Fire State Park. We'd been here before, many years ago, but it is really fantastic. This was Nevada's first state park, opening in 1934. The colorful rock formations are unreal! We also saw some Big Horn Sheep! We ate our lunch at a shaded picnic table at the end of the road.
From here it was straight shot around the north side of Vegas (can hardly see for the smoke) and on to Death Valley. We arrived at "The Ranch at Furnace Creek" around 5:30 and checked into our room. This place is getting a bit dated, although they built a whole new restaurant/store complex two years ago, which is very nice! (We have been here many times over the years, so we recognize and changes.) The temperature when we arrived was 93 degrees.
Our dinner was at the Last Kind Words Saloon. Very good and but expensive!
